Water is a fundamental resource for life, and in a drought context like the one we experienced in Baix Empordà during 2024, responsible management was more important than ever. At Hotel Bell Repòs, as a sustainable hotel committed to the environment, we implemented a series of measures to reduce water consumption and optimize its use, achieving a saving of 100 liters per overnight stay in 2024.

Water-Saving Measures at Hotel Bell Repòs

1. Efficient Irrigation and Sustainable Gardening

One of the first steps was installing a drip irrigation system throughout our garden, allowing us to optimize water use.

Additionally, we replaced the grass with a meadow of native and aromatic plants, which require less water and promote local biodiversity.

Thanks to this initiative, our garden has become an oasis for butterflies and pollinating species. In fact, we are registered in the national Zerynthia project as Butterfly Oasis number 414.

2. Water Collection and Reuse

To reduce water consumption, we installed two water collection tanks to reuse reusable wastewater from the hotel.

We recover condensation water from air conditioning units, and from 2025, we plan to reuse the wastewater from the osmosis system that provides filtered drinking water, a project developed in collaboration with the Catalan Water Partnership.

3. Water-Saving Technology

We will also implement a water monitoring system throughout the hotel with the company FLIWER, allowing us to detect leaks and adjust irrigation according to the specific needs of each garden area. This way, we optimize water consumption across the hotel.

4. Reducing Water Use in Rooms

To minimize water waste in the rooms, we replaced all faucet and shower aerators with the latest-generation models from the company SENSSAL.

Thanks to this action, we have reduced consumption from 13L/minute to 3.8L/minute, significantly lowering the hotel’s total water use.

5.“Green Bucket” Project

With the “Green Bucket” initiative, we encourage our guests to collect shower water while waiting for it to heat up and reuse it for toilet flushing.

This initiative has helped us save around 50 liters of water per day while also raising awareness about the importance of water conservation.

6. Sustainable Rooms

In 2025, we will launch the “Sustainable Room Project,” an initiative to reduce water consumption by encouraging our guests to forgo daily room cleaning services.

As a thank-you, we offer two hours of bicycle rental or two drinks at our Cocktail Bar.

It is estimated that cleaning a room in a two-star hotel consumes between 50 and 100 liters of water, so this measure will significantly contribute to conserving this resource.
