From Hotel Bell Repòs, as a sustainable hotel, we explain what circular economy is and how we implement it.
What is the circular economy?
The circular economy is a lifestyle approach that seeks to optimize resource usage while minimizing waste generation. Instead of following the linear “take-make-dispose” model, we draw inspiration from nature, where everything has value and nothing is wasted.
Circular economy promotes resource optimization, reduction of raw material consumption, and the reuse of waste, either through recycling or giving them a second life by turning them into new products.
Benefits of circular economy
Some benefits of circular economy for both the environment and the economy include:
- Reduction of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
- Less need for extracting new resources and raw materials.
- Encouraging innovation of new businesses based on resource utilization.
- Generating savings for companies and individuals.
Circular Economy Initiatives at Hotel Bell Repòs:
At Hotel Bell Repòs, the first sustainable hotel in Platja d’Aro, we are committed to sustainability and environmental preservation, which is why we carry out several circular economy initiatives:
- Cooking Oil Recycling: We collaborate with the company “Servei de recollida d’oli brut F. Espinosa” to recycle used cooking oil and turn it into soap.
- Material Reuse: We recycle cardboard boxes from daily bread deliveries by “La fleca de l’Empordà” to make mulch. This technique helps soil retain moisture, regulates soil temperature, prevents the growth of other herbs, aids drainage, and enriches the soil.
- Hygiene Material Recycling: We use recycled cardboard toilet paper rolls as plant seedlings, contributing to material reuse and making it easier to plant them directly in the soil.
- Organic Waste Recycling: We recycle organic waste from our kitchen and garden to produce compost, thanks to the collaboration of the Consell Comarcal del Baix Empordà, which has provided us with two composters.
- Food Waste Reduction: Through the Too Good To Go app, we sell surplus items from our breakfast buffet, combating food waste. Proceeds are donated to the “Sterna” association and the “Associació 18 nusos,” non-profit organizations working for local environmental preservation.
- Water Reuse: We recycle water from air conditioners for irrigation in our garden. Additionally, this year, we have invested in purchasing Pluvial rainwater tanks to recycle rainwater for garden irrigation.
At Hotel Bell Repòs, we are committed to sustainability and environmental preservation, implementing circular economy practices to maximize resource usage and minimize our environmental impact.
