At Hotel Bell Repòs, we take pride in being a hotel committed to sustainability, which is reflected in our daily practices and the initiatives we undertake. We have established a partnership with the Platja d’Aro Town Hall and the Municipal Organic Gardens to contribute to the circular economy by reusing recyclable materials used for sustainable gardening.

What is Mulching?

Mulching is a gardening technique that involves covering the soil with a layer of organic material. This practice, designed to mimic the natural conditions of a forest, offers multiple benefits for the soil and plants, such as moisture retention, temperature regulation, and inhibition of weed growth.

We Reuse Bread Boxes from “La Fleca de l’Empordà” for Mulching

Daily, we receive fresh bread from “La Fleca de l’Empordà” in cardboard boxes. Instead of being discarded, these boxes are reused as mulching material, with the aim of maximizing the reuse of the waste we generate.

The cardboard is shredded and applied to garden areas. This layer not only helps retain moisture and control unwanted weeds but also breaks down slowly, improving soil quality.

We Give a Second Life to Toilet Paper Cardboard Rolls

Additionally, to maximize the reuse of the waste we generate and give it a second life, we utilize cardboard rolls from toilet paper and other cardboard boxes to sustainably enhance green areas.

The cardboard cylinders left after using toilet paper also find a second life as seedling pots. Once the plants are ready to be transplanted, the cylinders are placed directly into the soil. The cardboard decomposes naturally, allowing roots to grow unrestricted and without generating waste.

Benefits of Mulching in Gardening

  • Moisture Retention: Mulching helps retain soil moisture, reducing the need for frequent watering.
  • Temperature Control: Regulates soil temperature, protecting roots from the cold in winter and heat in summer.
  • Prevention of other herbs: The mulch layer prevents weeds from growing by blocking the sunlight they need to germinate.
  • Soil Improvement: As the organic material in the mulch decomposes, it enriches the soil with nutrients, improving its fertility and structure.
  • Soil Protection: Prevents soil erosion and compaction caused by rain and wind.

Hotel Bell Repòs‘s commitment to sustainability goes beyond simple material reuse. Our goal is to generate no waste and give new life to materials that would otherwise end up in the trash. Implementing these sustainable gardening practices not only reduces our carbon footprint but also enhances the health and beauty of our gardens.
